Understanding Hearing Loss
Hearing loss is very common, especially as we age. Among adults age 65 and older, one in three people has some type of hearing impairment. In other words, if you believe you’re experiencing hearing loss, you’re not alone.
The number one cause of hearing loss is excessive noise
The normal aging process (presbycusis) is a close second – and it starts much earlier than you might think. Changes in hearing begin at age 20, with significant decline in hearing ability as early as 40 years of age.
Three types of hearing loss
There are three types of hearing loss: sensorineural hearing loss, conductive hearing loss, and mixed hearing loss (a combination of the other two). Sensorineural is the most common type of hearing loss, caused by withering of the hair cells in the inner ear due to age, noise damage or medications. Without these hair cells the ear cannot detect sounds properly. Your hearing professional will help you understand which type you have.
