Before you leave the office, your hearing specialist should ensure you understand how to place, remove, clean and adjust your hearing aids.
What to Expect
If your hearing aids are customized to fit the shape of your ear canal, it may be several days before they are ready. When your hearing aids are ready for you to pick up and start wearing, here is what to expect:
- Your hearing specialist will use specialized equipment or software to program and validate the performance of your hearing aids so that they are properly adjusted to your hearing loss.
- Your hearing specialist will show you how to insert and remove your hearing aids, how to clean and care for them, and how and when to replace the batteries.
- You will learn how to adjust your hearing aids for different situations.
- You will learn how to use your hearing aids with other devices like telephones, cell phones, TVs, radios and music players.
- Your hearing specialist will discuss the adjustment process with you. Some people are able to leave the office wearing their hearing aids full time. However, other people will need a break-in period with a schedule that allows them to gradually increase time of use.
- Your hearing professional may suggest programming your hearing aids using special settings for first-time hearing aid users. Then over a period of time, your hearing aids can be adjusted to capture more sounds as your brain adjusts.
